Servicing a Stuck Pump Shaft

When the pump motor shaft is stuck, the pump motor may hum, but water will not circulate in the tub. This may occur as minerals or other water debris consolidate on the pump's internal parts.

When this occurs, the solution is often manually rotating the pump shaft and breaking the connection between the internal pump components and the debris. This is done by the following process.

Safety First…unplug the pump.

Locate the pump and motor assembly. The pump is located at the end of the assembly, where the hoses connect to the unit. The motor is located at the opposite end of the hoses (photo 1A). You will need access to the end of the pump opposite the assembly.

Locate the motor fan cover on the end of the pump motor (photo 1B).

Typically, the fan cover will have a hole in the center that can be used to access the motor shaft (photo 1C).

"Insert a 3/8" or larger flat blade screwdriver into the access hole. Engage the screwdriver into the slot on the end of the motor shaft (photo 1D).

Rotate the shaft 360º in both directions to ensure the motor turns freely.

Plug in the pump and turn it on. Water should circulate normally.
